Find out more about my art, my process, and me here on my blog.
Life is slowly settling down into a normal pattern since my move. My kids are all at school this year, so I'm on my own during the day. It is a little lonely and much quieter. We are still in a small rental while we wait for our house to sell, so I can't unpack my whole studio yet. I did get some things out however and am getting back to art making little, by little. I started out with a Lifebook lesson. They are always inspiring and since I can follow a plan it is a nice way to ease back into drawing and painting. I'll probably keep on making these lessons for a while until I'm able to start something more ambitious. I still have plans for quilts in my head and in my inspiration book. These will have to come out sometime. I also have started to make patterns again and will hopefully have one ready to share next Wednesday. Here is the page that I created for one of Tam's lessons. I hope that I can inspire you to go out and be creative too.

I took these photos near Homer, Alaska yesterday. I am enjoying the scenery here and getting to know the area. There is so much inspiration here that I'm itching to get to creating. I'm looking forward to getting a house again and setting up my studio so that I can work again. I have a few basic supplies available, so I may create some simple things soon. Have a great week,
Janelle My family and I managed to pack up our house and make the long drive to Alaska from Michigan. The trip was close to 4000 miles long and took us 6 days of driving. One of my daughters, my two younger boys, and I drove up in our van. My brother drove up the Uhaul truck with our belongings. (My husband and son went to Alaska a whole month before the rest of us so that my husband could start work and my son could start school.)
We made the trip safely and got the truck unloaded. We are in a temporary home while we wait for our Michigan house to sell and can find a house here. The trip was full of beautiful scenery. We drove up through Canada and into Alaska. I'll share some of my favorite photos from the trip with you. I have some news to share. We are moving to Soldotna Alaska. My husband applied for a new job last week and he just got his final confirmation that he got the job.
My husband and oldest boy left yesterday morning, but I will be here till early September finishing packing and getting the house ready to sell. My daughters are staying in Michigan to continue going to college. It will be an interesting adventure. I'm a bit stressed with all the work that I have to do and all the unknowns. It all happened really quickly too. My husband has wanted to go back to Alaska ever since we moved down here 19 years ago. The public teaching jobs are much better off up there and his school down here is not doing well. I will get back to creating after we get settled and in the meantime I will post when I am able to. Janelle Hello everyone, I'm back with a new pattern. If you would like to see what everyone else created this week go here. I intended to add more to this pattern, but I got pretty busy today. My family and I are taking the wallpaper out of one of our bedrooms. We have lived here too long with this ugly wallpaper., but it is a time consuming sticky job. Hopefully I'll have more time next week to play around with a pattern. I'll see you back next week with a new pattern.
Janelle I went on vacation last week to visit extended family on my husband's side and on my side. My family and I visited 9 states in a week. We saw some great scenery on our long drives. We visited the Badlands in South Dakota, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, Fossil Butte in Wyoming, and Flaming Gorge in Wyoming and Utah. We also spent some time in Minnesota at my husband's family's lake cottage. We drove in these states on this vacation: Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, and Iowa. Now we are home and I'm catching up on laundry and other household tasks. I thought that you would like to see some of the pictures from my vacation. I hope that you enjoyed this brief tour of my vacation. I'll be back to creating art soon.
Janelle This week I filled in another shape with a pattern. I divided this oval into sections and put a different pattern in each one. Sometime I would like to color this one in, especially the center motif. If you want to see the patterns that the other artists created go here. Have a great week and I'll see you here next week.
Janelle This is the last week for Summer of Color this year. If you want to see what everyone else has made this week go here. It has been a lot of fun creating a small quilt for each of these challenges. I'll miss the activity and all the wonderful comments from so many of you. It has been a pretty busy summer for me so I haven't been able to comment on very many of the other artist's posts. Hopefully things will slow down a bit for me the rest of the summer and I can catch up with everyone. All the art posted has been very inspiring. I love seeing what everyone has done and all the other art forms being used. Now onto my quilt for this week. I used fabric that I had already dyed for this one and used an improvisational piecing technique that involved sewing strips and then cutting them, and sewing them back together again. This time I sewed the top and free motion stitched words and loops for the quilting. It has been challenging to try and make abstract quilts using different techniques each week. Now I can go and use my favorite techniques in larger quilts. It's not always easy to stitch words, but it is fun to do. I still need to get a matching marker and dot all the i's. The words need to be sewed continuously, so the dots get added later. I hope that you enjoyed this quilt. I am still adding to my purple and yellow quilt, so I'll have to share that later when it is done.
Have a great summer. Janelle I'm back with another pattern today. If you would like to see what pattern everyone else made go here. I filled in another shape this week. I chose a fish, I really like how it turned out. I may just keep filling in different shapes for a while and see how they go. I'll be back with another pattern and in the meantime have a great week.
Janelle This week the challenge colors are green, green, and pink. You can see all the details here, plus links to the other artists' pieces for the week. I decided to make a confetti quilt this week. I started by taking three colors of my hand dyed fabric and cutting them into tiny pieces with my rotary cutter. I used a variety of scraps and some bigger pieces. Some to the fabric I used had fusible on it and some didn't. I laid these fabrics out in a forest scene, put a layer of Misty Fuse over the top, and fused the pieces down to my base fabric. I had too much white space, so I painted over the Misty Fuse with more green. I used a green Meta Mica paint that works great on paper and fabric. After the paint was dry I put another layer of fusible down and fused the whole thing again. I free motion stitched trees, foliage and pink flowers in the grass and I gave the trees pink flowers too. Everything blended together with all that green, so it was really hard to see what I was stitching, but it worked out okay anyway. Next time I make a confetti quilt, I will use a broad color pallet and make a landscape.
I'll see you next week with another color challenge from Summer of Color. Janelle |

I am a mother of five children from ages 21 to 5. I spend most of my time mothering and keeping house. In my free time I like to play with textiles, art journaling and painting. I have a degree in textile and apparel studies with a design focus. Right now I am more interested in fiber arts than apparel design, but I don't know where my journey will take me. Categories
